Freestyle Skiing

snowMainstreamNorway, 1930

Aerial tricks, mogul runs, halfpipe sessions, and slopestyle courses on skis. Freestyle skiing is alpine skiing's rebellious younger sibling — all the mountain, none of the gates.

History

Freestyle emerged from hotdogging exhibitions in the 1960s and 1970s, though acrobatic skiing has older roots. Mogul skiing entered the Olympics in 1992, and the discipline has since expanded to include halfpipe, slopestyle, and big air.

Culture

Freestyle culture bridges the gap between skiing's traditions and snowboarding's creative energy. The community values style, progression, and individuality within the frame of two planks.
