Paragliding

windNicheFrance, 1978

Flying a lightweight, foot-launched inflatable wing using thermal currents and ridge lift. Paragliding is the simplest form of free flight — no engine, no runway, just a hillside and the air.

History

Paragliding evolved from parachute modifications in the late 1970s when climbers and skydivers began launching from mountain slopes. The sport rapidly developed its own wing designs, competition formats, and cross-country culture.

Culture

Paragliding culture is adventure-seeking and contemplative. Pilots chase thermals across mountain ranges, flying hundreds of kilometers in a single flight. The community values skill, weather knowledge, and respect for the air.
